How To Start a Money-Making Blog [FREE e-Course]

There are tons of ways to create a blog out there, but if you are looking to create a blog and actually make money from it, this is for you.

The sad truth is that many bloggers greatly limit their earning potential because of the blog platform they used to start it.

As bloggers who are pouring our heart and soul into what we write, we SHOULD be compensated for our work!

In this guide I am going to help you get set up on the right foot, so that you will be set up to succeed.

Why I think you should start a blog

In a lot of ways the playing field has been leveled with big media companies and bloggers.

You and I now have the ability to reach just as many (if not more) readers than big media sites with our humble little blogs.

Additionally, I’m fully convinced that each of us has something to share. There’s something in each of us the world needs to hear. Without getting too “Tony Robbins” on you, you have a unique set of gifts, skills, and experiences that allow you to offer some insight on something that few others can.

I can’t even begin to tell you how many authors, bloggers, songwriters, poets, and other writers who have had an impact on my life. You can never underestimate the power of what you’re writing.

And there isn’t an easier or cheaper way to do that than by starting a blog.

And since it can be a source of supplemental income, it can help you reach your financial goals faster as well!

Not sure what to blog about?

That’s okay I got you covered, check out this video below where we chat about:

  • 4 ways to tell what you should blog about
  • How to know if the niche is one you can make money with
  • How to get blog post ideas to write

How to start your blog right now

If you want to get started now, I put together a free tutorial that you can follow here to get started:

How to Start Your WordPress BlogOh and did I mention that if you use this guide, I will give you my $77 “Start Your Blog Now” 20-lesson video e-Course for FREE?

Watch the video above for details.

Step-by-Step Blog Setup Instructions

I recommend watching the video above, but if for some reason you can’t we have step-by-step instructions for how to start your blog right here:

1. Go to HostGator.com

I recommend self-hosted WordPress for bloggers (via Hostgator) who want to make money from their blogs. Hostgator is the host I use on most of my blogs and have used them for years. They are the best option I know of for new bloggers.

Go sign up for a webhosting package at HostGator.com (using this link to get your 45% off discount).  When the HostGator homepage loads, click the button labeled “Get Started Now!”.

2. Choose a Domain

Enter the domain you would like in the “Enter Your Domain” section.  (If you have already purchased your domain name, you can enter it in the “I Already Own This Domain” section.)

If available, it will show up in the list.

blog setup image

You will see a section that says Domain Privacy Protection with the box checked – I recommend keeping this for your domain because it will protect your online privacy.

But if you would like to save $12.95/year, feel free to skip this.

QUICK TIP: How do I find a domain name that is available?

Go to domize.com and search until you find a domain name that is available (green ones are open, red ones are taken). If possible aim for one that has at least one of the keywords you would like to be found in the search engines for.

3. Choose a Hosting Plan

Now you will need to select a hosting package.  I recommend the Baby Plan – that offers you Unlimited Domains – but the Hatchling Plan will do as well.

You can save more money by signing up for a longer term but you can pay month to month as well.

blog setup image

After picking your package type, you’ll need to enter your preferred username and security PIN.

4. Enter Your Billing Info

You will enter your personal and billing information in this section – you can pay with credit card or PayPal.

blog setup image

5. Add Additional Services

In this section, you can pick any of the additional services that you want but my recommendation is to move forward without anything additional at this time – you can always go back and add them on later.

Personally I don’t think you need any of these services.

blog setup image

6. Enter a Coupon Code

You’ll see your coupon code – SEEDTIME – is already entered to get you the 45% discount!

7. Review Order Details

Review all of your details and make sure everything is accurate. If it is, check the box stating that you agree with the terms and conditions (after reading them, of course…) and click Checkout Now!

Once your payment goes through, you’ll be redirected to this page:

Then once your account is setup and your order is complete, you’ll be directed to this page:

8. Go Check Your Email

You should receive two emails – one with login information for the billing and one with login information for your account.

When you receive the email with your account information (see below), click on the “Your Control Panel” link.

HG email

9. Control Panel Login

After clicking on Your Control Panel link, you will take your username and password from the email above and enter it into the cPanel to log-in to your control panel.

10. WordPress Installation

Once in the Control Panel, you will scroll to the bottom of the page and click on QuickInstall under Software.

blog setup image

You will find the WordPress install under Site Builders & CMS down on the page – click on WordPress.

blog setup image

You will pick your domain from the dropdown and click next.

blog setup image

You will fill out the Install WordPress form using your information – blog title, admin user, your name and admin email address.

Check the Terms of Service box and click the orange Install Now button.

Once your install is complete, you will see the page below which provides you with your URL Admin area, username and password.

You will also receive this information via email for safe keeping.

11. Accessing Blog Admin Area

If you see this page, it means your installation was successful and you can click on the green Admin Login page to get into your site. If you don’t see this, it means the DNS is still propagating through the internet. This can sometimes take up to 24 hours so if this is your situation, just jump on the chat box with HostGator (thats what you are paying them for) to see what’s going on and to make sure everything was installed correctly.

blog setup image

Once you are on this page, you will use your username and password from the Quick Install email that you received.

WordPress_Login

After logging in, you will be on your Dashboard!  Mark this page as a favorite and save your log-in information – this is where you will go to update your blog, create blog posts, etc.

This is a crazy world we live in…

Think about it.

You and I have the opportunity to sit in our living rooms with a laptop in hand and publish something that can have life-changing impact on someone thousands of miles away.

And since this same technology can be used for bad (and often is) I kind of feel a moral obligation to use my gifts, thoughts, and ideas to help make the world a better place.

My last 10 years

Starting a blog 10 years ago was one of the best decisions I have made in my life.

I know that is a bold statement, but it is true.

5 things I have loved about it:

  1. It is the easiest way I know of to share the message that I had burning inside of me.
  2. It has a better earning potential than any other home-based business that I know of.
  3. It has allowed me to work from anywhere.
  4. It has helped me learn so much more about a topic I was already interested in.
  5. It has allowed me to get paid doing something I love while helping others in the process.

How to start a website or blog in 10 minutes tips from a pro-blogger making a full-time living blogging! Is it too late to start a blog?

I get asked this a lot. Yes, there are a lot of blogs, but the reality is that while there is occasionally a benefit to getting in early, often it is a lot more work in the early stages.

This has certainly been the case. I have watched some of my blogging students go pro way faster than I did. And to be honest, the number of full-time bloggers that I know is staggering.

Additionally, when I started the tech was a lot more difficult – now you can run a blog an never even need to know a line of HTML code.

To answer the original question, I think it is more important to be your unique self with your blog today, but it is definitely NOT too late to start a blog.

And in many ways the opportunity for succeeding is far greater than it has ever been.

How to know if you should start a blog

Here are a few questions to consider:

Have you wanted to write a book?

If so, almost every book publisher is looking for authors who already have an audience. A blog is a perfect way to start building the audience while testing out ideas.

Do you have something that you just really want to share with the world?

A blog not only allows you to do this, but it can open up the door to other opportunities like: speaking gigs, consulting opportunities, book deals and a lot more.

Would you be okay giving up a few hours a week of Netflix?

I have seen many bloggers have tremendous amounts of success working only a few hours a week on their blogs.

Are you an expert or an enthusiast?

While this can help, more often than not I have found that “experts” don’t make the best bloggers. Typically, it is “enthusiasts” (someone who is really excited about a topic) rather than someone who knows a ton about it.

I think the reason is that many readers can better relate to an enthusiast who is a bit more like them.

For example, the biggest blogger in the Personal Finance niche admittedly knew little about Personal Finance when he started his blog. But he shared what he was learning as he was learning it and his readers loved it.

Are you a good communicator?

Lucky for us all, your writing ability doesn’t matter as much as one might think. I find it to be laughably ironic that English and Writing classes were always my worst subjects in school – and here I am writing for a living.

A more valuable skill is to be able to communicate ideas in a relatable way. There can be some overlap, but they are definitely different skills.

Can’t you start a blog for free?

Let me start by saying that there are definitely free options for starting a blog or website out there.  Some of them are actually pretty good looking.  And if you are just ‘testing the waters’ of this whole blogging thing, that may not be a bad route to go.

However, I strongly suggest once you get committed to the idea of blogging that you get a Self-Hosted WordPress site.

Here are 5 important reasons: (If you don’t need any convincing just skip this section)

1. You own it

When you have a Self-Hosted WordPress blog, you are paying for the hosting, but you also have full-control of your site.  It is similar to the difference between owning your home and renting an apartment.

When you own your home, you call the shots, you paint the walls the way you want, and you choose the color siding to use. Where as when you rent, you are very limited in what you can do since you are not the owner.  And the owner can even decide to sell and then you need to find a new home.

Blogger.com (owned by Google) has had multiple instances where the service was just down for 8+ hours.  So if you used them then your site was down that whole time and you had no control. You just had to sit and wait. While unlikely, it is possible that Google could decide to shut down the blogger service or sell it to someone else and since you don’t own your blog with them, THEY have all the control and you really have no say in what happens.

2. Customization

If you don’t want to be limited to themes/templates/skins for your blog design, then Self-Hosted WordPress makes the most sense.

3. It is the biggest blog platform by far

According to WikiPedia there are over 60,000,000 WordPress blogs out there.  Last update I heard was that over 30% of the entire internet is powered by it.  Every blogger I am friends with uses WordPress.  There is a reason that so many use WordPress.

4. Plugins

Another great thing about the WordPress platform is that there are tons of great plugins that you can use that will greatly increase the functionality of the site.  There are plugins that will allow you to instantly convert your WordPress site into a store-front to sell your crafts, a membership site to teach students, a gallery for your photos, and a lot more.

5. Monetization

If you are interested in making money, Self-Hosted WordPress is the way to go.  Many free options don’t allow you to run advertisements or limit your ability.  This is just another reason that all the bloggers I know use WordPress for their blogs. There are actually many more reasons why I think this is the best long-term solution, but lets save some space and just leave it at that.

How I make money with my blog

8000-word Free ebook about how to make money blogging written by professional blogger Bob Lotich of ChristianPF.com. He has been blogging full-time since 2008 and shares his strategy for growing his audience and earning more blogging in his book found here - When I go to family functions or social events I often get a blank stare when I explain what I do for a living. I think people understand the part that I write articles and put them on a website, but when it comes to making money from it, they don’t get it.

In this section I will lay it out and hopefully it will help bring some clarity…

1. CPC Ad Networks

There are a few different ad networks that I use. The most successful one has been Google’s Adsense program. Basically what they do is read the article that I write and find ads that are relevant to it and display them next to the article. The great thing about it is that by having extremely relevant ads, it actually can be quite beneficial to the readers as well.

For example, if I write an article explaining how we travel for free, but didn’t mention where you could open the credit card that allows us to do it, Adsense would likely be displaying ads of travel rewards credit cards.

So as a reader, if I read that article and decided that I did want to open a rewards credit card, the ads would be providing options that the article did not.

2. CPM Ad Networks

While Adsense pays on a click basis (CPC), I use other ad networks that pay by the total # of impressions (CPM).  So they might pay for $5 for every 1,000 impressions.

Generally you need a lot of traffic to your blog to earn well with CPM networks.

3. Affiliate Product Sales

Basically an example of an affiliate sale would be if you sold lawn mowers and I referred a customer to you, if they purchased you would pay me back a % of the sale for referring them. There are a million options for this on the internet now. The main programs I use are

  • Amazon’s Affiliate program
  • FlexOffers
  • Commission Junction
  • Shareasale
  • E-Junkie
  • LinkShare

4. Books & Course Sales

I also sell a few of our books and courses on our site as well.

5. Consulting

Running a blog is a great way to build a consulting business.  In the past I have offered consulting services and every single client came as a result of my blog.

How long does it take to make money from a blog?

The second question that people normally ask after, “how do I make money with a blog?” is, “how long is it going to take?”. Well, let me just say this, if you are looking for a fast way to make money, blogging isn’t it. It takes time and hard work. As you can see from the chart below it took me a long time before I was able to do it full-time.

But, for more than a year I was working at it about 10 hours a week. And don’t forget I didn’t know anything about blogging, advertising, getting traffic, etc when I started. So, if you know that SeedTime is a blog, then you have a head start on me. 😉

Great primer on blogging for money.

I was stunned to hear that you increased adsense earnings $1500 in 3 months? Wow.. guess i need to do some more testing. 🙂

Thank you so much for such a thorough article on the How to’s of writing a blog. I write for a website and have dabbled in writing for a blog, but I have never seen a more honest and thorough discussion of blogging and how to make money. I have been a subscriber to your blog for a couple of months. I thank you for such quality information.

Fun article to read, Bob. Just curious…was the $1500 increase due to one particular article or keyword getting hot? Or are you attributing it ALL to making the changes you mentioned (i.e. placement, segments, etc.).

Oh, and also…where is the Quicken Online aff program managed?

I’d like to go full-time in the next couple of years. I just can’t get affiliates to take off.

Thanks everyone – glad it is helpful! PT, I am sure some articles got hot, but some were getting hot before as well… I decided to spend a lot of time learning about Adsense and as I implemented all those things I learned I saw the increase… Like I said above, I am sure some of it was because I was doing so many things wrong – but the good thing for most adsense publishers is that they are doing things wrong that can be fixed pretty easily…

A very good article indeed. I think it’s important to point out how long it takes to establish a blog and develop traffic that has the potential to provide a full-time income. I think many people go into it expecting immediate results and are deeply disappointed when things don’t go their way.

Like you point out, it’s important to have fun and be passionate about what you’re doing. If you like to write about your topic, it will show.

I switched to basically the same ad positions about the same time as you and I also saw my adsense revenue jump 300-400% although not near the actual levels you are talking about.

Thanks so much for the great article. Google adsense is a mystery you are helping to clear up.

What a great article! You’ve inspired me to keep going (getting a bit hard to stay motivated at the moment). I can also remember the thrill of the first adsense click and never thought I would reach the $100 payout limit (I now make that in one day at times)….Still, now it feels more like a business with taxes, admin and lots of mail to deal with. Formed my S-corp recently, which was kinda cool, but has also doubled my admin work.

Despite following a similar trajectory to you (in most parts) I know I learnt a lot from this article and if you are new to blogging this article is a must read. But to make money, you have to treat it as a business and write articles from that perspective. Combining intersting articles with revenue opps is the hallmark of a good for-profit blogger!

This entry of yours have enlightened me. I’m a programmer, yes, one of those that can create applications like wordpress etc, etc.

I’m a college student, and of course as any other have the need to find new sources of income, like just today my poor desktop died so it’s just my laptop and me.

I do thanks you for inspiring me to stop wasting time and use my talent and creativity, it’s admirable to see bloggers like you having such commitment.

An excellent post containing real information, believe me, many people that knows all this are greedy and have succumbed to its nature. Kuddos to you!

This was a fabulous article. As a frugal blogger, who like you, had no idea I could make money with my blog when I started, has been amazed at the potential for making money on topics that are just about sharing your passion.
i didn’t know any of this about AdSense, even though I am making money through affiliates/sponsors, and will be implementing this immediately (as well as adding a Privacy Policy).

      Jana,
as far as I know blogger still doesn’t have plugin functionality. If you are really trying to make some money with your blog, I suggest switching to a self-hosted wordpress blog. It might be a pain on the front-end, but longer term it will probably be worth it…

The amount of time that you must have put into this article is awesome! It’s definitely a great resource for regular people looking to start a blog on a subject they are passionate about. That is the key to having a blog that makes money…write about something you love, because then you won’t drop it after a few months when you see that it’s near impossible to make good money blogging until years of hard work pay off.

I am currently trying to sell a graphic novel idea, as well as a screenplay, but I don’t have any grand ideas of making it rich. If one day I do, so be it. In the meantime I want to enjoy what I do. Thanks for all of the information, I have implemented some of the strategies that you have listed above. It does take some time but it is worth it in the long run, you are right about the social network sites. They are good but the do eat up a lot of your time. So you really have to be care full not to get carried away with those type of sites.

You do have to have some patience in the beginning, but when you get on a role things will begin to open up for you. I know for one thing, you should set you some kind of schedule when you are working on line. Just like you would do at a 9 to 5 job, If you take this serious you will be able to make some money. If it’s just a hobby it will take some time to see any profit. But for any one just getting started marketing their website or blog these are great tips.

Good luck and don’t let anything stop you!

I appreciated this web site but now am a tad freaked out. I took your suggestion and registered my domain name with Dream Host. Guess what? There is not phone number, they don’t return e-mail and I cannot log on.
My credit card went through instantly. I finally locating a hosting site telephone number (thank you for your help GO Daddy) and when I called the number I got a recording which said they do not return phone calls!
I would really like to know how to rescue my domain name at this point, as it’s a good one. Never again will I take a chance like this.
And, my to my chagrin, I’ve found hundreds of comments that are critical of Dream Host. I really should have been more careful.

I thought you might want to know what my experience has been.

      December 20, 2009 at 1:45 pm

      Heidi,
sorry to hear that happened – but I do suggest you stay on dreamhost until you either get your money back or get your hosting set up. They (just like most cheaper hosting companies) don’t have phone operators – which is what helps them keep the prices cheap. But having used them for about 3 years, I can vouch for them that they do return emails – sometimes it may take longer than I like, but they have always gotten back to me (usually within a day). If you don’t get an email response from them, please send me an email and I will contact them myself. The bottom line is they are a cheap host and they don’t have some of the features you would get if you were paying $50/month for your hosting. So it all depends on how much you want to spend…

    Hello,

Thank you for the response regarding problems I was having with Dream Host. I know my comments must have been posted but for some reason they are no longer there.

I will continue trying to work with Dream Host via e-mail. In the end, I think it will be best for me to work with someone like GoDaddy.

The info posted here is very informative. Thank you.

This material is extremely helpful. I just started a blog at wordpress.com to discuss topics mostly to politics and news, and this info is crucial for me to get more traffic. Of course, I would not mind to make money from the blog, but the discussion is more important to me. You are completely on point on the guest posting tips you provided, as they one of the most efficient tools to get people to visit your page. You have captured me as a regular visitor with the quality articles you publish, and the Christian perspective on personal finance.

    Hey Bob,

This, as you mentioned, was a long post. Also though, it was thorough and to the point.

Since joining my friend’s team and blogging since August last year, I have found it to be one of the most clear and concise explanations of what a blog is and how to make money for beginners. Also, being somewhat experienced, I still learned of at least a dozen things that we could do better to increase our traffic and revenues.

However, after reading your amazingly thorough and easy-to-understand article, I think I am going to give it a go. I am a stay-at-home mom and artist who freelance writes occasionally. Hi Bob, thanks a lot for the post. I’ve had several blogs in the past but I sorta closed all of them down because it was just taking up too much of my time. I only used adsense and obviously misplaced it 🙂

However, there is one thing I definitely have to confirm. I had one blog post, which I did about a trailer for a video game. I did an in-depth analysis of the trailer and provided further links for reading about it. Till that day, my blog had an average daily readership of about 20-30 people. The day after I posted the article, it spiked to about 200+ and remained that way for the next 2 weeks. Then it died down again. If only I had continued writing and put up some more and eventually more ads, it might have held on for longer.

I’m starting up a new blog next month . I’ll be sure to link back to your site.

Have a great day Bob and God bless you 😉

“I know some people don’t have a problem promoting anything that will pay them, but I just can’t, in good conscience, recommend something to someone that I don’t genuinely believe will help them.”

I have always felt the exact same way. I don’t think Jesus would open a bar or sell people cigarettes because he wants what is best for people. Placing the welfare of our brothers and sisters above financial gain is a VERY rare trait today, and I commend you and thank you for it.

    Bob,
This will be the first “blog” I have ever “blogged”. I’ve been in the IT industry for over 15 yrs. now and have just not had the urge to get into the whole blog thing. I use the internet strictly for bill pay and informational purposes. Usually get on-get off stuff. I’ve always been curious about it though and your blog has not only been very informational, but also very easy to work with. Very user friendly indeed. I read and write a alot and have always thought of publishing (if that’s the right word) my thoughts on the internet. Yours is the first site that puts the “how-to” all together. I’m not necessarily a “religious” man but find much understanding in the way your relate the people and the world in general. Because of this I felt a “thank you” was in order, and who knows, you may have opened me opened me up to finally following though with my long time urge to get “blogging”. Thanks again.

It’s wonderful to find someone as generous as yourself to help us newbies in the world start with good advice as well as the links to follow to use that advice. I became unemployed the day before Christmas of 2009 by our company closing so this has given me much more hope in my endeavors and in reaching some goals I have set for myself. Many heartfelt thanks for the time and effort you have put forth to present this to the world!

  154. Monevator says

    February 10, 2010 at 3:42 am

What a fabulous, fabulous article – you’ve been so generous with your information here.

I wrote a modestly notorious article about blogging for money which I still stand by and I think presents the other side of the story (hope you don’t mind the link, please do delete it if you’d prefer no links in text).

The competition level in blogging is absolutely insane — not on a personal level, as fellow bloggers are usually very generous with their time and advice — but on the level of sheer volume.

I think you have to really love writing and sharing information to blog for years. You also have to love participating in the community and promoting. (I think this is where I fall down a little — more because of time than anything else).

If you blog because you have something to say, that’s the best reason. Hopefully the money will come later, but if it doesn’t you still got to say your piece.

I think it’s very telling that ChristianPF started as a blog with something to say, not as a revenue stream.

Thanks again for a great article — I hadn’t realized about the privacy policy, and will be investigating it for myself now!

Total newb here. This is great stuff!!! – Man, thank you very much for this information. It’s truly inspiring.

Like you, before you started blogging, I work in Corporate America. Fortunately, I have not been laid-off. But with today’s economy, who knows what the future has in store. Regardless, I’m looking to make a change because I’m no longer happy with my current career choice. With that said, your article is truly inspiring and has motivated me to take the plunge and try to make a living blogging. I’m hoping to replace my current income within 2yrs working PT while I work FT at my current job.

I am a little confused on one thing though. You show the graph on how your income increased, but you don’t mention how much you currently earn. Now, I would never expect that you would reveal that information. It’s no one’s business but your own. However, to get a true sense of how much you a person can expect to earn their first year, it would be helpful if you could elaborate on how much a newbie, such as myself, can expect to realistically earn without revealing your income of course. I realize there are several variables to consider – content, traffic, types of ads, etc… but perhaps you have a number that you’ve seen on more than one occasion reached for first year (PT) bloggers. I’ve heard people say 60k is nothing from a blog working 20hrs/wk. But I tend to be a little old school and think nothing is that easy; especially when it comes to making money.

I’m looking forward to applying some of the lessons you’ve learned to my own endeavors. Best of luck in anything else you do. – Thanks again.

Two days ago I asked myself a question: ‘Can I make money from writing blogs?’ I have been writing my website now since 2004 and apart from a few friends & my students I don’t think that many people have read my blogs and actually I wasn’t really aware that it was even possible.
So I put the question ‘How can I make money from blogs?’ in my favourite search engine and I found your detailed explanation which I am reading and applying step by step.
Thank you so much for providing all this invaluable advice.

She started a blog and had over 2000 folks in no timel She was a runner up in a Martha Stewart project. However, she was doing nothing at all to make an income from her growing audience. She and her husband are graduates of UVA and young Christians that have so much to offer, especially in writing articles. Please keep them in your prayers, I know you are the missing link to getting them back up and running with their blog!

However, I noticed no donation link? How are we suppose to pay you for your useful information? Would it be against christian values to put a donation link on the site?

Why is it important to self-host your own blog? Would it be okay to stay with one that is not even if you’re serious?

  216. kaui says

    May 19, 2010 at 3:58 pm

@Bob yes I will definitely link your page on to mines when I get my website up and running and figure that part out lol. I’m still on a free blogger, just starting to get my feet wet.

@L as for the self-host blogging…I’m still new to this all but as far as my understanding goes, if you are “serious” as you say, but you don’t say “serious” in what way? Do you plan to make money? Are you advertising your business? Also having your own private domain name that belongs to you is better, for example, myblogger.com, rather than myblogger.wordpress.com. And make sure you buy your domain name from a different company than who the webhosting. Keep is separate. Why? It’s complicated lol. I’ll leave the rest to Bob.
Thanks Bob for your website!! Definitely an inspiration to us all! I hope I gain a million visitors one day. That would be so awesome! 🙂 God Bless.

I counted many “wows” in comments.. many “wow great post”.
The interesting thing is that many people read/know most of the tips, but do not bother to follow them. and that is what diffrenciate the succesful bloggers from other.
Those who willing to inverst time, effort and sweat for success are few.

I went from 0 to 20,000 visits in less than 1 year and the traffic continue to grow every month.
I take lessons every time – this article is also a good lesson to me. try to learn what I can.
my tip: People/bloggers still do not understand the power of facebook and linkedin and what an active presence there can bring to their blog.

Very interestingly written article. It’s quite catchy and gets straight to the point.

Although most of the tips mentioned are wide known, there are few tricky ones that people (myself including) easily neglect like the privacy policy for example.

There’s also this negativity going around that you can’t make money off blogging, and it’s usually coming out of people that have no idea about what blogging is.

So articles such as this, are pretty inspiring giving many people the faith to keep on going, no matter what the current results.

Thanks for taking your time to write it all out.

Thanks so much and I look forward to practicing all of these techniques and creating a successful blog.

I have been tracking your blog for over two years now and as I was asking the Lord how to make my blog better, money and all, your site came up and I read this post, signed up for updates, I am wondering why I didn’t find you in 2007 when I started blogging!

Thank you Bob for your generosity.

    Bob,

I have for a while now been considering writing starting a blog of my own. I really just intended for it to be a fun outlet for thought that ramble around my head.

About 2 months ago I was laid off of work, and after hitting the job boards and unemployment line unsuccessfully, I decided to try my had at a commercial blog.

After doing a little research I stumbled across this blog, and it must have been sent from God. I finally started my own blog, and with your tips and suggestions I feel that I am moving in the right direction for making some money at this.

Thanks for your time and research, and for posting this for all to see.
God Bless you in your work.

Priceless advice! Alot of the tips you presented will work with a blog or a static website. I’m just starting out as a blogger, so every tidbit of information that I get is helpful.
You mentioned that experimenting with Adsense colors and placement is critical to success. I’d just like to add one footnote. In my (limited) experience, the size of the Adsense ads plays a role as well. I’ve had the most success with the 75 x 375 ad-blocks placed beneath paragraph breaks.
I’ll be back to read through the rest of your articles…great job!

Thanks for the great post bob. Awesome and very inspiring. I also have a background in financials so I wanted to host a blog about my work even before I found out that blogs can also generate income. anyway, I have a question for you (or if anyone can answer). I appreciate your help all the way.

Q: It seems that most bloggers suffer from lack of traffic. I understand that becomes an issue. but if you are blogging for money, why can’t you use just display hot sale items(ex. electronics, computers, etc) from affliliate programs……IN ORDER TO INCREASE traffic? Is it because Google won’t recognize you(again, b/c you don’t generate enough traffic?)? or is it because Affiliate Programs won’t sign with you unless you generate certain traffic? Thanks for all the help.

    One question you didn’t address:
Is it easier in the long run to start an LLC and get a buisness account running from the begining, both of which are inespensive / free. Rather than wait to do this once income is generated?

    Bob,

This is a phenomenal article, in my opinion the best on the web for the given subject (and as I have found out, this tends to be a fairly cluttered subject).

The question that I have for you is:

What is the advantage/reason for using a theme framework like Thesis or SemiLogic in contrast to using a free WordPress theme?

While I suspect it has something to do with the monetization of the blog, I could really use some clarification. Thank you!

    Casey

    • Bob says

      November 1, 2010 at 10:06 am

      Casey,
If you are a developer, you don’t need the premium themes, but I am not, so using thesis helps me to customize millions of things that I wouldn’t have been able to with a “normal” theme. Many of them are cosmetic things, but in terms of monetization, being able to customize where your ads show up makes a huge difference.

The local library only allows one hour per person per day online. Not much motivation at this point to start a blog, yet I feel maybe I’m supposed to (still praying). Hi, great site and info. Still got lots more to read here. I started an e store and blog about six months ago. I seem to be doing pretty good with traffic, however my problem is the replies I get seem to be from people trying to get links, not real customers. Not even sure they are really reading the blog. Been out of work for 10 months due to a work injury and trying to earn a living online. Even tried Clickbank, but no luck yet. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Hi, Bob,

Wow, this is quite a post. I wonder how many of your visitors realize how much you’ve given away here. Some people sell ebooks with less information for $47.

I have a clarification. Part of your success lies in picking a subject that lots of people need and are interested in. If you were deeply interested in anteaters, for example, you’d be making much less money. So people should blog about what interests them — and a significant number of other people.

And you stick to your subject. This is important for SEO purposes. Some people blog about their cats, their diets, their relationships, their jobs and so on — and then wonder why nobody but their friends visit their blogs.

Stick to one subject. Adding personal info, stories and viewpoints is great, but keep it focused on the needs of your reader, not on your self-expression.

    Rick

    Hi Bob,

My name is Dan Lawlis I’m a comic book creator that has produced illustrations for mayor comic book publishers like Marvel and DC comics. Although I make my living in advertising now, I still create comic books of my own creations. Recently I have gone online with a Christian sci-fi comic book called ORANGE PEEL 3. It’s a story set in the present day on a distant planet. The visuals are designed to be striking and the content of the dialog gives the fundamentals in the Christian faith (to the best of my ability). This is a comic book for older teens. There isn’t much out there for that age group. I believe that’s the most difficult time for a persons faith, a time when you start to ask the really tough questions and I wanted to create something that would supply answers in a language they can understand.

I only thing is, I don’t really know how to promote it. Originally I thought Christians would be honest and financially support an online book that promoted Christian values as opposed to atheist beliefs that most of the comic book characters have. I got a lot of people writing telling me how great it was that I was doing this, but they never sent me even a few dollars for my efforts. I met a lot of great people, but that doesn’t help with creating more stories. Plus I hate having to beg for donations. I decided to try a google Adsense add and see how that goes, but frankly I’m not overly optimistic.

Do you have any suggestions on how to use my website to bring in some income that will enable me to finance the creation of more stories?

    Thank you,
    Dan Lawlis

I have been thinking of starting a blog site recently. My husband and I are planning on taking off in our RV for semi-retirement when all of our 6 children have graduated highschool. We both agree that a blog site ,consisting of something that we are both passionate about ,would be a decent way to start earning a modest income to supplement our travels. Where do you find free, royalty-free photos for your site?
What is the difference between a website and a blog? Is the only difference the fact that blogs are updated more often?
Can you tell us about RSS feeds. What are they exactly and how can you use them with blogging? How do they benefit blogging?
And finally… you mention that you have other sites and other business ventures. What are they? Just curious about what it takes to “make it.”

I just started my blog this week, and I am fairly confident that it could be successful to earn supplementary (debt-reducing!) income. I really think this article was great reading, and it will for sure inspire quite a lot of people to give it a go for themselves.
I run a few membership sites, where I use me WP-MU to give some members a benefit of having their own Blog, all setup and ready to go.

Unfortunately I am sure non of them have ever seen an article like yours, because they are doing absolutely nothing with their assigned Blog.

It is true what you say about Focus being everything to be able to make any money online, but people tend to spread their efforts.
They should be using a Sniper-Riffel instead of a Shotgun.

Most people are joining various sites that actually are great, but they do not put the effort in just a few sites, and for that reason they never really succed in any of them.

I’ve always wanted someone to talk and vent and express my opinions to without having a lectur follow, and thats what I want to create with my blog. I was wondering what the chances would be of making a profit or if this is even an idea worth pursuing.

Thank you. Is there anyway to make money off an opinionated blog that people just get really into? Instead of writing useful articles..I know it sounds dumb, but I feel I could maybe make a blog similar to a TV show to where people want to know what I say next type of thing. I want to write articles, but more of random articles connected to my blog that people would have a humorous time reading possibly.

Well, I’m a couple years late to the game here it looks like, but absolutely great stuff. Very little has changed in the last couple years, so this is all still very useful stuff!

Especially liked the section on ad placement and testing. I learned this lesson myself when my click-throughs for a specific ad block increased a good 50% simply by moving it down about 75 pixels. It sounds crazy, I know, but I tested it more than once and that simple minor move was definitely legit. Just like you said, test test and test!

I just want to start off by saying thank you. This was a great article for someone like me who is just starting out with this whole blog thing. It seemed very intimidating before but now I feel like I am starting to get the hang of it and with so many blogs and sites like this with free information on them I feel like the learning curve might not be all that bad. My blog is for helping people make money online using tools other than blogging to make money. And just like blogging it is not something that happens overnight some of the programs work better than others but if you are willing to put the time and effort in you will almost always see some sort of return that will be worth every minuet of hard work.

Fabulous article here. In fact, I’ve been inspired enough that for the past several days I’ve set about starting my own website/blog. Thank you so much for your words!

But there’s a glitch. I’ve gotten Adsense and Chitika to take a chance on me and I’ve generated codes, etc. to put on my Bluehost site. I just have no idea where to paste the codes to make them appear on my site. Any ideas?

  435. Jim says

    April 15, 2011 at 10:44 pm

I thought that I had submitted my query, but apparently not. Here goes again.

Bob, that was a fabulous and inspiring post! In fact, I have spent the past 4 days setting up my own blog (basiclawprof.com), powered by WordPress and hosted by Bluehost. I found a wonderfully manipulable Theme (the third one I experimented with) and just finished tweaking it this afternoon.

But for the life of me I cannot get my HTML to take an edit. So while I have accounts with both Adsense and Chitika, with ad codes ready to paste, I cannot put them on my Site.

I’m sorry to bother you, but can you (or anyone on this list) help me? I can get to the Source through either Mozilla or IE8, but my computer won’t let me modify the code from there.

Thanks for your help (both past and present),
    Jim

I read your article, and have learned so much from it and doing it, especially considering I’m not web design savvy. I’m really taking this seriously as an opportunity for financial freedom. I was on WordPress and got a free blog. I wrote a few posts, to build up my readers. Now, I signed up for Adsense. And the best option for me I thought, since I’m a newbie, was to do web hosting. I chose Bluehost. I know I’m learning little by little and many business people don’t wish to explain exactly how they do what they do. But from reading this article, I feel this is a place where my question will not be rejected as being stupid or to prevent competition. If someone would help me with this question.
I have my code for the ad, but don’t know where to place it. I spoke to Bluehost and they told me they don’t deal with ads so they couldn’t help me. I spoke to WordPress, and they said they won’t help either since I’m doing the installation. On Google, all I get is how to make the ad, and have the code to copy and paste it, but not where to actually put it on my new domain website. I feel like I’m getting the run around and I’m really anxious to get started. Where can I go to find the html to place the ad? Please advise. Thank you.

I am certain that almost every human being has people in their past that wish to or would seek to discredit them if given the opportunity. Is this avoidable? I am talking about comments that go well beyond disagreements or constructive criticism, such as bashing, sharing of inappropriate personal information, etc. In addition, how do you keep up with all emails and/or is it necessary to respond to every comment? So far your site has been my primary resource for getting started, but there is one area I’m struggling with…what do you do about copyright for your blogs? One of the things that I want to do is a guest blog article. Your article mentions this as a way to get 20,000 people to a site immediately. I assume that this statement is predicated upon writing a guest blog for a site with 20,000 followers. I have yet to find a site with over 5,000 followers and have found only one of them. Great stuff

    One question…how about security?

For example, when one is an affiliate, using a legal entity such as an LLC to say, Amazon, what information would a purchaser be able to see?

The reason I ask is because, unfortunately, there are those who react inappropriately, even violently, to opinions, etc that differ from theirs.

So, true. You have to do a lot of work to make money blogging. Everyone thinks you can’t make money blogging, but you can. There are so many nay-sayers out there. Many people just aren’t trying hard enough or working hard enough at it. You have to be consistent. You can’t post one blog post and expect riches. It actually has to be a job, at least for a while. I am conducting an experiment and documenting it in my blog where I discuss how to make money blogging: onlinemoneytrip.blogspot.com. This is to see if creating a ton of free content rich blogs with ads and affiliate products that are highly marketed can create an income. I know it can, that’s why I’m doing it. But I have to do it to prove it to everyone that it’s possible if you put the work in.

Thanks again for all the tips. I always enjoy reading what you have to say, and I always gain a lot of knowledge from you. You’re awesome!

The information you have shared is every so helpful. I appreciate your website, honestly, and clear direction.
I am starting my own blog, and like so many others, and you at one point, have never done this before! However, I am excited. I have a question…
I have gone so far as to purchase a domain name (a .com name). I have not yet found a hosting site or set up a wordpress account. I am still navigating my way through this and am not ready to spend the money on paying the monthly service fee until I have some time to set up and get my feet wet. If I go with wordress.com and get a free blog site, will I be able to LATER switch to my hosted site and keep all of my previous entries? Or will I be starting over?

I agree, I think that what we’re seeing is that more and more people are becoming authors and creating their own products. And you’re right, webmasters get to keep 100% of the revenue from their own products being sold on their site, while ad networks pay a much smaller portion of earnings. The situation should get better and better, as barriers to entry for both decrease year after year. Perhaps we will reach a point when everyone is selling their own product directly.

    Bob:

    Couple of questions for you.

At your suggestion, I signed up for Bluehost a year ago. But I’m not considering switching to HostGator. (And I’m happy to see that you did the same thing–kinda validates my own thoughts on this being a good idea…) But I wanted to ask you–what was your experience like transferring your sites? Is this a difficult process, with downtime involved?

One of the benefits offered by HostGator is UNLIMITED URLs…and considering I’ve already purchased additional URLs in the past few months, I see that I would have actually paid less, overall, had my site been hosted by HostGator.

Also–wondering why you keep sites hosted at multiple providers, if you have one favorite provider. Doesn’t that cost more? If you only had one host with unlimited site hosting, you’d only have one monthly fee–instead of fees from several providers.

    hey!
Great blog post! I started a couple blogs a few years back and had to best of intentions of making some money from them. I was researching seo, decorative themes and also had a journal with my handwritten article ideas that I intended to add to my blogs. Trust me, I call myself doing it all to perfect it. Then, life happened. I had to find a steady paycheck. Then my lifestyle led to the creation of my daughter (who is now 14months old)!! I”ve been working and taking care of her. But it all comes back to wanting to live a comfortable life, being able to provide for my daughter, raise her as a Christian, becoming a better Christian myself, and living life to the fullest and not just coasting through life. I say all of that to say- great blog, very insightful, helpful and detailed. I will be returning as often as I’m allowed with a toddler attached to my every move, (lol) to use your knowledge as a guide to getting back into my blogging career. And here’s a note- blogging full time is another form of entrepreneurship and I studied entrepreneurship for nearly four years in college. Trust me, a high degree of accomplishment comes from being your own boss and being in charge. So to all Bloggers- Take Charge and Flourish! keep a look out I plan to make a name for myself in some form of business..

It sure would be nice to make money from just one page on my site. For some reason, a post I wrote about cooking steel cut oats overnight in a crock pot, using the crock as a double-boiler, has been a huge resource with thousands of hits. Is there a way to make money on only one page so that less popular pages on my site aren’t peppered with adsense ads?

This article will remain in my favorites for many more months to come. It has become the hallmark of how I have designed my website and have been methodically implementing the techniques and strategies as they have come up.

I want to urge potential bloggers of the importance of budgeting your time and coming up with a plan for development of your blog. Getting your head high in the sky with getting rich is fine, but you cannot let it control your whole day because it is likely that it will. When you first start and you do not see instant results it hurts and confuses you.

The biggest bit of advice I can urge is to write because you like it initially and use it as a project. For example, my blog I am using as a supplement to my resume. I will be able to show employers I can methodically update it with quality content. I am hardworking and consistent. Do not quit your day job. Make it a hobby that will eventually make money.

The other thing is do not be afraid to invest money in your blog. But do not go over board. Focus on quality content, a great domain name, and excellent hosting. Tons of images and graphics are distracting and may be a waste of money. You want your readers to enjoy the readings and be able to read them quickly.

I enjoyed reading this post, although I don’t blog directly for money. There is another way to make money with a blog which is blogging to communicate with your subscribers. In this model, the blog isn’t used as the primary way to earn an income, but it does help to maintain an already existing income, and sell additional products to existing buyers.

Plus it can also act as a way to listen to customers and prospect needs to create new products in the future.

In general I like the article very much. I’ve even forwarded it to one of my best friends because she and I would both love to work from home. That being said, I’ve not seen an answer to your question, but I’m very interested to know how much is made by working 10 hours a week. The chart shows how long it took to see an increase in revenue, but it didn’t say what the revenue was. 10 hours a week to make $20 per month is a lot of hard work for peanuts. The chart would have made more sense if it had shown the Y Axis in dollar amounts, but there is no gauge at all. Is the highest point $5, $20, $500? Nobody knows. She says that she makes enough to pay her bills each month and that this has replaced her day job. But there are a lot holes in those statements. Was her day job part time or full time? Is she single and carries the whole load herself or is she 1 of three roommates and has minimal bills? She says nothing about the actual $$$. That scares me. Her disclaimer is that you won’t get rich over night. I get that. Kudos to her for doing all the leg work and sharing with us how to do it. There ia a lot of salesmanship here. I am laid off and would love to work from home. That is why I’m interested and that is why I’m concerned.

This post is one of my absolute favorites on blogging and has been the most honest and comprehensive method on the topic. I have worked on systematically applying these methods and suggestions over the short course of two months that I have had a blog. I have not made any money yet, but this is due in large part to the particular niche I am targeting and the competition that I have. Nevertheless I have watched my Alexa rank jump several million positions in just these two short months, far more than many websites that are years old. Similarly I have acquired some extremely beneficial and arguably rare back links from high ranking websites. I have been aggressive with social media, although it is not paying off as well as I expected. Most of my traffic comes from forums I post on and has recently exploded. Thanks again! It is in my favorites and I will continue to check back on it as needed.

I am really interested in Google AdSense, but, I don’t have a large amount of followers at this point… On the other hand, every time I publish a new story, I gain a few more followers. I started my own personal finance blog 4 years ago and I too have experienced the rewards (both financial and otherwise) that blogging can bring. Additionally, I’ve learned a lot through the process and met a lot of great people! All this because I decided to try something different one day! There is certainly a lot of competition these days when it comes to blogging so I wouldn’t get your hopes up too much for overnight success, but if you’re passionate about a particular topic and stick with it, readers will come!

Thanks so much for all of this advice! This is probably the first webpage (out of many) that I have read that is honest and helpful. You are very giving in your knowledge…I am sure that many have benefited from your wisdom and experience! I currently have my own blog, and would like to start to monetize it a little (just to see what happens). I would love to be able to stay home with my children and run my blog for a living, but I realize that earning that kind of money will take time (in order to surpass what I make with my full-time teaching job). Hopefully, with your tips, I can begin to realize my dream! Thanks so much again and Merry Christmas!

Hey- I just happen to come across your comment. I just had my first child in October and have been writing a blog about her and my experiences as well. I am staying at home with my daughter (one of my last post was about this). I was also a full time teacher, now I’m going to watch a few other children in my home, which will almost supplement all of my teaching salary. Have you ever thought of that? That way you can stay at home, still make money, and blog! There’s a huge market for it!

    • Megacoolmama says

      December 28, 2011 at 11:41 pm

Hi, Ashley! First of all, thanks for responding to my comment! Also, I think it’s wonderful that you have been able to stay home and supplement what you made teaching…that is quite an accomplishment! I know that I can eventually do what you suggested if I put all of my efforts into it. However, I do know that it will take time to make the $75,000/yr. I make teaching. Since I also provide insurance and retirement, I would have to look into those options. My husband makes less than half what I make, so I definitely have to have some sort of income. The neighborhood that I am in seems to be made up of many SAHM who care for other children, so I would have to really market myself there! How long did it take you to get to where you wanted to be with your income? Once again, congrats to you for following your dream…I hope to one day get to where you are! 🙂

Wow, thanks for the information. I do Taxes on the side and I like what you mentioned about that you were passionate about helping others. My goal is not really to do more and more taxes. My goal is to help folks with Spreadsheets. I’ve taught night classes on Excel at our local College and now would like to offer a weekly for now BLOG on doing various Excel Spreadsheets. Maybe starting off with Lessons, then later as folks listen in, take on their requests and build them publicy for everyone to use.

    Best Wishes and Thanks Much,
    Neal

Bob, Wow! Thanks so much for the info! I am referring to this over and over again. A quick question: WordPress offers to sell the rights to a domain name through them ($17/year + $8 for privacy). Are there any benefits/disadvantages of doing it through them vs. the other sites (a la GoDaddy, etc.) that you mentioned?

Again, thanks soooo much! I will link this info as soon as I figure out how!

I’ve been doing this for a lot of years, so much of what you write here, for me, is now common sense. For a beginner blogger though who wants to make money at it, you’ve given some excellent tips (and even I found a couple I hadn’t thought about before :)), thanks!

This is some great information you got here. I just started a blog last year then I dropped it for a few months because I had to focus on my 9-5 (getting married and having a baby on the way might have something to do with it as well). But for some reason, I picked it back up again a few days ago. Redesigned the whole layout and added some more content. Let me tell you this… adding the privacy policy DOES YIELD MORE from adsense. I didn’t believe it but in less than 24hrs. of adding the privacy policy, I can already tell the RPC is already way higher. Anyways, I just wanted to let you know that I am well on my way to becoming a full timer like yourself but I know it’s going to require a lot of work. Don’t worry, not gonna quit my day job. Thanks for all this info. It was very helpful!

Thank you so incredibly much dear brother! I am a single mother with 4 kids and a lifetime of abuse, trying to scrape by with a min. wage job and the help of a very generous support group God brought into my life…the last 3 yrs have been getting my feet back under me and my head somewhat straight as to what life is meant to be, and learning who I am. One thing I am is a writer, and I have been wanting to blog about my experiences and help others, and earn a living, eventually, also. I struggle with depression and that has been an issue with getting moving on my site, but finally got brave and told a dear friend what I am trying and said friend has really stepped in with the support and the encouragement and the boot in my rear I needed *smile*. I have spent the last week learning, and now need to start writing…this article has been invaluable and I can guarantee I will be coming back to it for some time! Bless you for sharing what you have learned…hopefully I will be able to pay the bills soon! *smiles* The tools and links you provide…awesome. “He who gives to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will not be slack in repaying” This is a giving….Jesus, repay him well…..

Thank you for this site, this has been an inspiration to me to begin my blogging career. We fell into the same situation as I was downsized suddenly after spending 15 years in a corporate executive position and now I am going to attempt a try at blogging and doing something I have a passion about.

Thanks for the great article. I still have to do some exploring to start making $$$ off my blog and you’ve definitely helped give me the direction I need. My question is, are the CPC and CPM sites free to use? And once you sign up and add their widget or ad to your site, do you have to do anything else or does it automatically work for you (sorry if that question is confusing)? Thanks!

    Absolutely fantastic article, Bob.

You packed in a ton of very useful information.

The only downside for me when reading such a thorough post on “How to make money with a Blog” is having to admit that I have so much more work to do.
Blogging can be one of the easiest and at times one of the most difficult things we can do(As far as a way of making money) depending on how we have been approaching it.

I’ve had a blog for about two years now, with less than 100 visits each month. Since I read your article and did a lot of the things you suggested, my visits have sky rocketed to 1400 last month. I haven’t made any money yet, but at least people are starting to find my blog, thanks to you. 🙂 One thing that I have found that has increased visits is to post my blog on facebook groups that pertain to the blog post.
