Let me start by saying that it was difficult to create this list.
Think about it, I am trying to pick the best verses from the Bible about a particular topic.
Are there really best verses, or are there just those that have impacted us more than others?
I tend to think the latter.
So, this list is just that. These are the 5 Bible verses on money that, even as I just scratch the surface of understanding them, have revolutionized my financial life.
Each one of them has had a strong impact on many decisions in my life.
I hope you allow them to impact you as well and that they give you a better glimpse into what the bible says about money.

1 Philippians 4:19
And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
If you have lived much life at all, you are probably well aware that putting your trust in the economy, your employer, or your bank account is not a good idea. They are all fair-weather friends. They all can be helping you greatly one minute, and then the next everything has changed.
God, however, is always faithful. That is why we should always be trusting Him as our supply! It doesn’t matter if there is a financial crisis, if you get laid off, or your 401k loses 37% overnight – God will still supply your needs. Just like He promised.
2 Malachi 3:10
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.”
It is a bold step of faith to start tithing. Cynics sometimes argue that tithing is not required in the New Testament. I actually agree, since our salvation is no longer based on works, but on faith in Jesus. But to be quite honest, as New Testament believers, 10% should just be a mile-marker on our giving journey. After all, God owns it all and no matter where we are as far as what we are giving, we should always be striving to give more. From my own personal tithing experience, I found that stepping out in Faith in this area and testing Him proved to be quite fruitful and yielded a pretty amazing testimony.
3 1 Timothy 6:10
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
This verse is so often misquoted that it is almost laughable. Money is not evil. The love of it is. Having a million in your bank account doesn’t mean that you love it. Having $5 in your account doesn’t prove that you don’t.
For example, Warren Buffett has billions in his accounts, but he is giving almost all of it away to benefit the lives of others. On the other hand, I have heard stories of people getting killed over a matter of $20. It is a matter of the heart that only God can judge.
4 Acts 20:35
In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’
Giving sets us free, while hoarding entraps us (James 5:2). Giving changes the lives of others (John 3:16). Giving brings blessing back to us (Luke 6:38). Giving allows us to store up treasures in Heaven rather than here on the earth (Matthew 19:21). Giving really is fun – we need to be in on it.
5 Proverbs 22:7
The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
The freedom of being debt free has always been so incredibly enticing to me that I have been willing to give up a whole lot in exchange for it. The last 3+ years, my wife and I have been diligently chopping away at it, passing up opportunities to spend as frivolously as some of our peers have done. Getting out of debt is not easy and often requires a fight, but the freedom that comes with it is so worth it.

Thanks, Bob. This post was encouraging.
Thanks for the post! I would like to personally interject my own little thought about the tithe. I actually (very respectfully) disagree that it isn’t required. I do completely understand your thoughts on it. So again it is simply a respectful disagreement. Back in Genesis (before the law even existed) Abraham gave tithe to Melchizedek. So my thoughts are if it was important enough for Abraham who was before the law and works, just maybe it is that important for us. I will completely agree, the dividends of tithing far outweigh not tithing!
Blessings!!
Amanda, we are in agreement. For more on this discussion, check out this post… https://seedtime.com/tithing-in-the-new-testament/
Praise the Lord my brother, First of all Abraham tithed a tithe after he was blessed first. Not according to the traditional teaching on tithing that wants you to believe God will bless you after you tithe. Second Abraham knew how to tithe because of his upbringing in the land of mesopotamia. Remember him and is father was worshipping false gods (Jos. 24:2) Do some studying on Mesopotamia and there false gods and you will see that they worshipped and tithed to other gods. Thirdly, Abraham tithed on spoils of war not income, but Abraham was rich but he did not tithe on any of his riches. Fourthly, the word “increase ” has been taking out of context. The traditional church teaches that the tithe is 10% of you income but that is not true. The meaning of the word “tithe” is tenth part. Everything that was tithed was by the work of the LORD’s hand not man’s. God’s creation was tithed upon not man’s labor. When you read your bible you will see the the word say’s that the “land produced” not man. God’s creation does not need man’s help, it will produce all by itself. God never left anything undone in his creation. Even the animals produce all by themselves man has no part but to bring a tenth of God’s creation to the storehouse so his people will have much provision. That goes to show you that man will not get any glory that he steals today from God. The word “increase(tĕbuw’ah)” and “wages (sakar)” should be carefully studied. If we are suppose to tithe on our income than why didn’t the writers of the books of the bible use “wages” meaning contract for labor. Makes you think. You are right if people want to tithe there is nothing wrong with it but don’t make it a law. It’s free will giving. If a church financing is going down then it’s not the people its the teaching. Man can not stop God’s divine purpose. When the teaching is true to every word in the bible and the saints become loving the LORD with all their heart then then giving is not a problem. The church that I attend (I am not going to say what church because God’s going to get the glory not the church name.) don’t ask for tithes or offering or pass a plate around. We have 4 boxes in back of the church so what God puts on your heart so be it. Not bragging but facts goes to show we bring and average of 6 million in a year out of free will offering. It’s not about the church, it’s about your community and witnessing the gospel. If you got time study to word “Corban” (Mark 7:11) please do so. This is not taught in the church to much because of the fear of people helping their family first before they give to the church. We are first held accountable to take care of the first ministry which God gave us and that’s family. Well brother I know it’s long but just some thoughts. God bless, Brother Matthew PS. The love of money is the root of all evil.
Nice! All of them are great. Times like these we tend to forget that it is better to give than to recieve. It feels pretty good too.
Thanks
Very very happy indeed. Amazing teachings!!!
Great post! It’s amazing how many scriptures are in the Word of God concerning money and money management. I enjoyed reading this.
Every time I think about slowing down on paying off my debts number 5 comes to mind. I don’t want to be anyones slave
These 5 verses cover our part and God’s part for realising the financial blessings that God has already stored up for us. They sum it all up for me: I do my part and give God the opportunity to proof Himself as He promised.
I so much enjoyed reading the 5 Bible verses about money that every christian should know. I will add them to my personal favorite verse: “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth”. 3 John 2 (KJV)
Great article. Your point on tithing reminds me of an awesome personal experience. The verse truly drives home the point. Keep up the great work!
We thank u for wat u are doing for its transforming our wallet keep up the good work God bless u
Just a quick note to inform you that this article has been included in this month’s blog carnival of ‘Christian Family Information Exchange’. Thank you and please continue submitting your articles each month.
I enjoyed this site and the verses will be helpful in my study.
I also need help finding the verse, where can I find the verse about the devil being a thief and having to pay back ? times what he stole?
These verses were very helpful to me. I recently was saved and my faith in god is the strongest it has ever been. Ive struggled my whole entire life, and really putting your life in gods hands is the thing to do believe in him, love and cherish him he is the most amazing thing I have ever experiencedd in my whole life. I believe he has seen my struggle and I also believe that he is helping me slowly but surely. Remember its all in GODS timing……
GOOD READ. TNX.
Thank you so much for this great opportunity.
According to Acts 8,money cannot buy anything in kingdom of God. Not because you Give that you are a child of God. Know God first. If you real know God and his power and love people, Give will not be your problem. I see that those insisting on giving every day making people busy in their mind if they don’t have money.we should rather compel Christians to love and share their loves. And where there is love, there is blessings of the Lord.
I am blessed by your message.
God bless you
This is a timeless post that will always speak to those in financial crisis. I found this post while searching for verses to read during financial hardships and am thankful to have stumbled up this. May God bless you.

I truly appreciate this list. It is good to have God’s scripture remind me that God is in control of my life and my finances and that He is my provider.

Awesome word, the 5 bible verses every Christian should know about. Thank you so much. My initial response was Lord forgive me, and please help to increase our faith. Reading this has been eye-opening.

Balchand
Hi thanks I really appreciate this post.I do believe its good to give and I”m thankful for God’s Blessings. Keep up the good work.
Came across this while I was searching for something else… thank you for reminding us of these principles. I am so tired of hearing “Christians” say that God wants us to be rich! God wants us to be blessed, but that doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with money! When we can trust God to provide and use what we have to help others, that’s when we’ll be happy.
Hey, thanks alot for these verses, I really appreciate them.
Especially the verse regarding that its more blessed to give than to receive.
These verses constantly remind us not to put our money Before God and reminds us to be generous. Thanks and God bless, keep up the good work!
Nice. I appreciate this post. I’m in debt big time, and I’m working on getting out of it, and never going back. I’m convinced it was sin. Anyways, you said something about “we no longer have to work for our salvation, it’s through faith now”. It’s always been through faith, even in the OT. Just throwing that out there. Anyways, good read, and thanks.
Hello I appreciate this message, the funny thing is I was looking up scriptures that could relate to me and I remembered that in church the pastor will always make us recite Malichi 3:10 and I was not sure where to find it in the bible so i just started typing blessings so big you wont have enough room to recieve it and I stumbled onto your article not only did I find the scripture that I was looking for but I found 4 more. Thank God for you and may God bless you and your family.
God bless you!
Just one comment about Malachi 3:10. When God spoke this to our Jewish people through Malachi – they were in a terribly backslidden condition. God even had to make a bargain with the Jews and tell them that if they would tithe, He would give them rain from heaven and bless the land physically. But we don’t have to bargain with God today, because the Bible says in Ephesians 1:3 that “we are blessed with all spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus.”
18 The old rule is done away with. It was weak and useless. 19 The law didn’t make anything perfect. Now a better hope has been given to us. That hope brings us near to God. Heb. 7:18-19
In the new covenant we are not to test God, but to trust God. We now live by grace not by law.
The doctrine of “tithe” in the Christian life generates a sense of fulfilling an obligation, a commandment (law), creating an expectation of return. It prevents him from developing a true Agape to give, thereby limiting the flow of generosity in its whole.
Before 10% belonged to God. Now however 100% belongs to God.
BOB!!! It is two years later and your words are still empacting lives of those who are fortunate to read it. I googled lessons on finances because I am in so much debt I can’t even tithe. It’s killing me inside and I am so ashamed! My prayer is to clear up enough debt so that I can.
Great post.. not to early, not to late, right on time.
Thanks for your words brother. I will share them as I attempted to collect a love offering from my church for our pastoral family.
God’s love
wow, i am so encouraged by these verses and it is inspiring to see your works. i pray that God continues to use you and that a lot more people get inspired by these verses
great is our God & awesome in his words……loveu Lord,,thanks for posting…
Interestingly, Warren Buffett is an atheist.
In today’s society, everything is all about money, money, money. People like myself tend to forget what life is really about, and sadly some people don’t even have an idea. Reading this was a reminder to me of what is truly important. I’m only 18 and all I do is worry about my future and worry that I won’t make it. Now not only do I feel less stressed about my future financially, but I am also reminded to thank God for everything I have and to continue helping those that need it, whether they are more or less fortunate than I am. Giving is such a wonderful gift. Thank you for this post.
I actually came across this website because I wanted to watch the Charlie Brown Christmas, and it brought me straight to this website. So coming to this website to watch it was quite the blessing, as well as reading something that I really needed to read! So thank you, & God bless!
“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
Matthew 6:19-21
God bless you all, for you are all appear to be continuing on the righteous path to Him.
Wonderful tips.Holiness alone may not bring wealth but following these divine principles no doubt, will.
Thanks.
I came upon some money the other day, it was an unexpected bonus and I didn’t quite what to do with is. Since it is not part of my wages, I didn’t know if i should tithe with it. And since I do have a lot of bills to pay, I was kinda thinking that maybe I should just give 10% of what’s left after I pay my bills. But after reading your tips, God clearly spoke to me “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse..” I felt embarrassed for a moment but relieved also that at least I can do something about it. Thanks for the helpful tips. God has blessed me tremendously in so many ways. A small amount of money should not matter.
“Acts 20:35”
“In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
There are times to think past “money” when we look at these verses. There is a wealth of knowledge to share with the weak. If that were not so, this article would not have touched so many people.
I believe God uses people to say what even the Church no longer preaches in their concern to be loving and compassionate. The truth. Which, sometimes is harsh, hurts or hits the bullseye no matter how loving it is said.
Having the courage and conviction to write these things, to apply wit to them and truth in just the right amount mixed with non-judgement, I believe is a gift from the Holy Spirit.
Well done.
This was such an inspiring post! I have also learned that faith in God delivers us from financial burden even when it is looking pretty foggy at the end of the tunnel. Just hold on and He will clear the way. Thanks! You have motivated me even more to become debt free.
I’m in the military and with the money crisis we are facing as government employees it has made really view my spending and that of the young soldiers out there. I was googling through some sites for budget spreadsheets and came across your site. I absolutely love the information and that it is based biblically and that it’s a want. A personal want…to be financial stable and debt free. The bible has the answers and always will. Thank you.
Forgive my grammar . . .
Fabulous, fabulous words and teaching. I agree wholeheartedly. I also applaud your candor in saying the NT doesn’t demand tithing but it is a good thing to do that helps us be free, gives God the opportunity to bless us, etc. Giving is so much fun. Giving tells God that Yes, i know you are in control and yes I know You are the Great Provider. I don’t need to figure it all out for God has the plan. I don’t think we can give too much. Oh Boy, God is so good and the best provider ever!
Thanks – an oasis of comfort in a desert of despair!
Thank you soo muchh Bob. this was very enlightning . this was very inspirational in my time of financial deficit. ive recently been yearning for a job becuase i thought money made the world go round. but i recently figured out by a bible verse that “TRUE WEALTH IS THE WEALTH IN CHRIST.” indeed lesson learned.
Friendly reminder: Giving our OWN stuff away to the poor is honorable. However, what the bible DOESN’T say is, “hire politicians to take your neighbor’s money & property away and give it to someone else.
Jesus helped the poor through His church, not through Caesar.
Amen!
i find these verses very helpful in my christian walk. I believe if christians base their giving on faith then indeed windows will be opened. Thank you very much Bob and God bless you for the knowledge you shared.
I really love this verse ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ Seriously the joy and completeness you recieve when you give is the ultimate peace and blessing from GOD.
Awesome information. I just had a revelation: I recently took a small loan and after much financial struggle the last few years, we have not taken any loans. Since the loan, I have had some bad news on another topic financially, and it didn’t make sense. I prayed about it and I believe the Lord revealed to me that he was dissapointed that i took a loan after working so hard to train me not to take any loans the last few years.
This definitely helps with personal finances. I wonder if this is also applicable to our government’s debt crisis. Why our country is in such deep financial trouble? Is it excessive love for money? How does the national debt got so big and how to begin paying it down? Should govt tax more (tithe?) and give out more money in programs and subsidies, or should govt not receive, let people keep and give directly by cutting taxes. Or it is purely politics, where money is the root of all evils and power. God bless and thanks for the post.
I have been struggling financially for 2 years since I lost my job. Family and friends have been truly a blessing to me during my barren season. Often, I have felt like I was on a lost island. Many of these scriptures have help me tremendously. Pray for me that God gives me a financial blessing this Christmas season so I can be a blessing to others who are far more worse off than myself. Keep the encouragement coming. Bless you and yours.
Thanks for the post. This morning I was praying about a verse that would help me in the new year be a better steward. Your web site was the first thing that came up and the five verses and commentary resonated in my heart. Printed off two sets of them. One for my husband who liked them as well and one for me. Thank you for your ministry!
